About Dr. Brett Bingham

I’m Dr. Brett Bingham — a companion animal veterinarian, former practice owner, mentor, and communication coach.

I did not build VetComm Academy because communication came naturally to me.
I built it because I needed it.

Early in my career, I learned something veterinary school had not prepared me for. For me, the hardest part of practice was not the medicine.

It was the conversations.

  • The difficult clients.
  • The emotional decisions.
  • The estimate discussions.
  • The unclear recommendations.
  • The unrealistic expectations — from clients and from myself.
  • The feeling that I had handled the medicine correctly, but still walked out of the room feeling like I had failed.

Those early experiences punched me in the gut.

There was a point when I honestly wondered if I wanted to stay in veterinary medicine.

I didn’t know exactly what was wrong, but I knew something had to change.

Then I was fortunate to have a mentor introduce me to communication skills. That opened my eyes to what was possible. But over time, I learned something even more important:

Communication skills are most powerful when they are used within a structured, intentional exam-room system.

That system became what I now call the Exam Room Flow Model.

Using an exam-room communication system changed the way I practiced. I felt more prepared. I led appointments more clearly. I connected with clients more consistently. And I started to enjoy practice again.

When I saw what it did for me, I began teaching it to veterinarians in our hospitals.

Then I saw what it did for them.

Young doctors gained confidence. Experienced doctors refined their approach. Appointments became more organized, more effective, and less emotionally draining.

That is when I knew this needed to become more than something I taught inside our hospitals.

VetComm Academy was born out of necessity for myself, then evolved to help others.

Now I feel a responsibility to share this system with every veterinarian I know — anyone who wants to practice with more confidence, more control, and more joy.

Experience Behind the System

VetComm Academy is built from real veterinary experience, not abstract theory.

  • 25+ years in companion animal practice
  • Former practice owner (4 hospitals) and hospital leader
  • Former President of the Idaho Veterinary Medical Association
  • Idaho Veterinarian of the Year, 2022
  • Mentored hundreds of veterinarians
  • Taught, tested, and refined this system in real veterinary practice

That experience matters because veterinary communication is different.

  • It is not just customer service.
  • It is not just bedside manner.
  • It is not just being nice.

Veterinary communication happens in a high-pressure environment where the patient cannot speak, the client is emotionally invested, medical decisions often involve money, and the veterinarian has to lead with both clinical judgment and human connection.

That is the environment this system was built for.

Why This Work Matters

I believe communication is not a soft skill.

It is a clinical skill. It’s not optional.

“Communication is a core clinical skill of veterinary medicine and one that needs to be taught and learned to the same degree as other clinical skills.”

— Cindy L. Adams, DVM

Veterinarians aren’t struggling because they don’t care, or they’re not smart enough, or capable enough.

They are struggling because no one ever gave them a practical communication system they could consistently use in real practice.

VetComm Academy was built to change that.

My Mission

My mission is to help veterinarians practice to their full potential by teaching a practical communication system they can actually use in the exam room.

I want veterinarians to feel more prepared, more confident, more grounded, and more able to lead the conversations that shape the experience of practice.

Ultimately, I want them to LOVE being a veterinarian.

I do not want other veterinarians to have to go through the same pain I went through to learn this.

I spent thousands of hours and thousands of dollars studying, practicing, testing, and refining this system so other veterinarians can learn it faster, use it sooner, and enjoy practice more fully.

If you are a veterinarian who wants to feel more confident, more prepared, and more fulfilled in practice, I built this for you.
